The Alaska salmon industry withdrawal from the MSC certification program is a sign of the maturing of the sustainability movement. With so many fisheries certified as sustainable, obtaining certification is no longer a strategic market advantage - it is a requirement for entry to the market. In a way, this makes the MSC a victim of their own success. For consumers and retailers, the Alaskan decision does not mean they don't have sustainable fish - on the contrary they have a transparent, ISO certification program to FAO standards. But moving beyond the MSC gives them the ability to spend more marketing money on the intrinsic benefits of Alaska salmon - leading to better differentiation among competing fisheries, and more education for consumers. This is a positive step.

Natasha Price is a crafty person. From knit hats to family dinners, homemade is kind of her thing. One reason for the DIY attitude according to Price is because living in Alaska is expensive enough without going out to eat every night. So after realizing that her family's monthly grocery bill was topping $600, she went on a quest to feed her family on $75 a week. Not an easy task in a state where nearly all food is shipped thousands of miles before reaching consumers. The topic of the debate, “Consumers have a duty to buy locally,” is of particular interest to the Anchorage community. As a growing city with a thriving business community, Alaskans are well known for their locally branded apparel and love of farmers’ markets. Johnson, who picked the topic in collaboration with this year’s co-sponsor, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, hopes that this topic will highlight an important element of discussion surrounding Alaska’s fiscal future. “While we talk a lot about citizen’s relationship to the government and its fiscal concerns, I think it’s equally important to talk about our relationship to the general economy,” Johnson said. “When it’s just as easy to click the order button from your living room, what obligation do you have to support your neighbor’s efforts...

Alaska Pollock is one of the most heavily consumed fish products in the US, and is also the largest US food fishery. However, 31% to 44% of all Alaska Pollock sold in the US is Product of Russia. Most Consumers are confused - they think the name means the product comes from Alaska. The Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) has petitioned the FDA to change the market name of Alaska Pollock to simply pollock. That way only pollock truly from Alaska could be called Alaska Pollock. This would bring the label in line with FDA's practice in 99% of their other species labeling guidelines.
